Slaughter formed in Toronto, Canada in August 1984, becoming one of the earliest and most important acts in the development of death metal as a distinct genre. Founded by Terry Sadler and Dave Hewson, the band's demo recordings — particularly Surrender or Die — circulated widely through the international tape-trading network and helped define the sonic template that would characterize early death metal. The band briefly featured Chuck Schuldiner of Death in 1986, and their debut album Strappado (1987) remains a foundational document of the style. Slaughter's ferocious combination of hardcore punk aggression with extreme metal riffing made them a key link between the two worlds.
