Named after the ancient Egyptian city discovered underwater in 2000, Herakleion is a death-thrash trio from New Orleans formed in 2021. Guitarist/vocalist Apollo Xydias, drummer Speed Wilson, and bassist Christian Woerner channel the city's heavy music legacy through a prism of thrash and death metal aggression. Their debut EP 'Curse of Eternity' and follow-up 'Necroverse' capture the raw intensity of a band steeped in New Orleans' tradition of punishing, swamp-bred heaviness.
Intoxicated formed in Florida in the early 1990s and came out of the same state whose death metal history gave heavy music some of its most violent foundations. The band began as a thrash metal act, releasing several EPs through the mid-1990s before entering a long quiet period. Their return in the 2020s repositioned Intoxicated as a sharper death/thrash band, still rooted in speed and crossover aggression but heavier, nastier, and more in line with old-school Florida extremity. The Walled EP signaled the comeback, while Watch You Burn delivered a full-length blast of compact, riff-heavy metal with songs such as "Assholian Mode," "Grovel," "Revelation Denied," and the title track. The album's sound is raw but not careless, drawing from Kreator, Death, Obituary, Municipal Waste-style crossover energy, and classic speed metal. Intoxicated's appeal is in the collision of eras: early thrash attitude, death metal grime, punky momentum, and the feeling of musicians returning to unfinished business with more force than nostalgia.
Iron Reagan is the crossover thrash supergroup formed in Richmond, Virginia in 2012, featuring Municipal Waste vocalist Tony Foresta and members of Darkest Hour, Cannabis Corpse, and other Richmond heavy hitters. Their music is a furious, lightning-fast tribute to '80s crossover thrash and hardcore punk, delivered with the tongue-in-cheek humor of bands like D.R.I. and Suicidal Tendencies. Albums like 'Worse Than Dead' and 'Crossover Ministry' are pure adrenaline rushes, rarely letting a song exceed two minutes.
Killspree is a heavy act that channels raw aggression through thrash-influenced metal and hardcore punk intensity. The band delivers fast, violent music built on relentless riffing and high-energy performances designed for the pit. Their uncompromising approach reflects a commitment to extreme music's DIY underground traditions.
King Parrot are a Melbourne grindcore and thrash-infected hardcore band whose music is fast, filthy, and deliberately unruly. Formed in 2010, the group became known for a combination of abrasive records, chaotic live shows, and music videos that match extreme metal violence with Australian black humor. Albums such as Bite Your Head Off, Dead Set, Ugly Produce, and A Young Person's Guide to King Parrot capture a band that draws from grindcore, punk, thrash, death metal, and pub-rock aggression without smoothing any of it into respectable shape. Matt Young's vocals are harsh and manic, while the guitars and rhythm section keep the songs short, nasty, and full of sudden impacts. King Parrot's strength is that the comedy never drains the threat from the music. The band can be ridiculous, but the riffs still hit, the drums still blast, and the live energy is plainly serious. They carry forward a distinctly Australian tradition of heavy music that values irreverence, volume, and physical confrontation. King Parrot matter because they make extreme music feel both punishing and unpretentious, refusing to choose between technical aggression, punk stupidity, and the communal release of a very loud room.
Pioneering all-female extreme metal act from London, Ontario who burst onto the scene in 1999 with their debut 'Spit', becoming one of the youngest bands ever signed to a major label. Kittie's sound evolved from aggressive nu-metal roots into a sophisticated blend of death metal, thrash, and melodic heaviness across albums like 'Oracle' and 'In the Black'. After a lengthy hiatus, their 2024 reunion proved the enduring ferocity of Morgan Lander's guttural vocals and the band's uncompromising heaviness.
Oakland's Machine Head have been a pillar of heavy metal since Robb Flynn founded the band in 1991, with their debut 'Burn My Eyes' becoming a groove metal landmark. Their 2007 masterpiece 'The Blackening' marked a dramatic creative peak that earned universal acclaim, and through lineup changes and stylistic shifts, Flynn's unrelenting vision has kept Machine Head a vital and confrontational force in metal for over three decades.
Founded by Dave Mustaine after his acrimonious firing from Metallica, Megadeth channeled that rage into some of thrash metal's most technically brilliant and politically charged music. 'Rust in Peace' and 'Peace Sells... but Who's Buying?' are cornerstones of the genre, showcasing Mustaine's razor-sharp riffing, sardonic wit, and complex arrangements that elevated thrash beyond brute force. As one of the Big Four of thrash metal, Megadeth have sold over 38 million records and remain a vital force in heavy music after four decades.
Metal Church emerged from the Pacific Northwest in the early 1980s as one of thrash and power metal's most distinctive voices, with David Wayne's piercing vocals on their self-titled debut and 'The Dark' establishing them as peers of Metallica and Megadeth. The band's revolving lineup over the decades — including stints with Mike Howe, whose return on 'XI' was celebrated before his tragic passing — has never diminished their commitment to riff-driven, uncompromising heavy metal.
