The 11th Hour is a Dutch doom/death metal project founded in 2008 by Ed Warby, veteran drummer of Gorefest and Ayreon, who performs all instruments and clean vocals on the recordings. The debut album Burden of Grief (2009) featured guest harsh vocals from Rogga Johansson, and their second album Lacrima Mortis (2012) featured an expanded full-band lineup including former Gorefest guitarist Frank Harthoorn. The project is currently inactive, but its two albums stand as accomplished entries in the melodic death-doom tradition.

The Abbey is a Finnish doom metal quintet formed in 2021 around vocalist Jesse Heikkinen (Iterum Nata) and co-vocalist Natalie Koskinen of funeral doom act Shape of Despair, with the lineup completed by drummer Vesa Ranta (ex-Sentenced) and guitarist Janne Markus (The Man-Eating Tree). Their debut album Word of Sin (2023) on Season of Mist weaves ritualistic themes drawn from esoteric belief systems into a sound blending progressive doom, gothic metal, and dark rock. The combination of Heikkinen's and Koskinen's contrasting vocal approaches is central to the band's distinct identity.

Death/doom duo from Brasília, formed in 2020 by guitarist and vocalist Rogério Marques (ex-Embalmed Souls) and guitarist and producer Lucas Santiago. The band debuted with the five-track EP First Act on March 20, 2020, with Lucas Santiago handling bass and drums on the recording and Fábio Herenio of Apostasis contributing a guitar solo; their debut full-length Winter of the Soul followed on July 22, 2022.
Rochester, NY, US · 2008–present · active
Rochester, New York's The Abhorrent have been practicing death metal since 2008, a long run in a Rust Belt city whose underground has quietly produced serious extreme metal for decades. They play with the kind of grim authority that comes from years of commitment — death metal that doesn't reach for novelty but perfects the form instead.
US · 2023–present · active
The Abyss Looks Back formed in 2023 with a blackened death metal approach that leans into the philosophical weight of their Nietzschean name — the sense that peering into extremity changes the one doing the looking. Still early in their existence, they've arrived with the focused intensity of a project conceived with purpose, blending black metal's atmospheric malice with death metal's structural brutality.
Debrecen, HU · 2017–present · active
The Abyss of Desolation is a brutal death metal band from Debrecen, Hungary, formed in 2017. They unleash punishing, guttural extremity with blast beats and crushing heaviness.
Annecy, FR · 2016–present · active
The Abyss Order from Annecy in the French Alps deliver black and death metal under a name suggesting an organized descent into the void since 2016. A decade of abyssal compositions from the shores of Lake Annecy has channeled Alpine beauty into extreme darkness.
Springfield, MA, US · 2004–present · active
Springfield, Massachusetts' The Acacia Strain have been a defining force in American deathcore since 2004, building a reputation on impossibly dense breakdowns, guttural low-tuned brutality, and a nihilistic worldview that feels more like a threat than a lyrical stance. Their sound sits at the intersection of death metal's technical menace and hardcore's confrontational physicality, with an almost suffocating heaviness that has made them a touchstone for a generation of heavy music fans.
Seattle, WA, US · 2025–present · active
Seattle's The Accüsed are one of the Pacific Northwest's most storied names in crossover thrash, a band whose splatter-punk aesthetic and machine-gun riffing helped define the intersection of hardcore and thrash in the region's fertile underground. Reconstituted and active as of 2025, they carry decades of grime-soaked credibility into a scene that owes them more than it often admits.
