The Horrors are a Southend-on-Sea band whose career has moved from feral garage punk and gothic theatrics toward expansive post-punk, shoegaze, and synth-laden rock. Formed in 2005 by Faris Badwan, Joshua Hayward, Tom Furse, Rhys Webb, and Joe Spurgeon, the group first arrived with a sharp visual identity and a raw debut album, Strange House. Rather than stay fixed in that early style, they made a dramatic leap with Primary Colours, opening their sound into darker, more atmospheric territory influenced by krautrock repetition, post-punk bass motion, and psychedelic texture. Later albums such as Skying, Luminous, V, and Night Life continued that pattern of reinvention, balancing menace, melody, and studio experimentation. The Horrors' music often works through tension between style and substance: leather-and-shadow imagery on the surface, but underneath it a serious interest in sound design, mood, and transformation. Their strongest songs feel nocturnal and propulsive, with Badwan's voice floating over bass-driven grooves and guitars that smear into color. The band matters because it escaped the limits of hype, turning a striking debut-era persona into a longer, stranger body of dark alternative rock.
The Howling bring an electrifying blend of punk rock energy and electronic elements to their performances, combining beats and samples with aggressive guitar-driven songwriting to push the genre into new territory. Their approach to merging electronic production with live punk instrumentation creates a high-energy sound designed to captivate audiences in both club and festival settings.
Symphonic/funeral doom metal from San Antonio.
The Hu turn Mongolian traditional music into a forceful rock language, using throat singing, morin khuur, tovshuur, jaw harp, flute, and large percussive chants as the center of the sound rather than ornament. Their self-described Hunnu rock style draws power from old melodies and steppe imagery, but the songs are arranged with the momentum of modern hard rock: locked grooves, dramatic builds, choral refrains, and electric guitars that reinforce the acoustic instruments instead of covering them. Early singles such as "Yuve Yuve Yu" and "Wolf Totem" introduced that mix with a stark, battle-chant directness, while The Gereg and Rumble of Thunder expanded it into longer, more cinematic pieces. The band can sound ceremonial, defiant, or celebratory, often within the same track. Their live rise has also shaped the music, pushing the material toward arena dynamics without flattening its cultural character. At their best, The Hu make heavy music feel communal and ancestral, with hooks carried by timbre, rhythm, and voice as much as by guitars.
New York's The Hudson Horror, active since 2012, meld melodic death metal's emphasis on hook and harmony with a darker death metal undercurrent, resulting in music that is heavy without sacrificing forward momentum. Named for the river valley that cuts through the state, there's a grandeur and melancholy to their sound that suits the geography. They occupy a productive space between accessibility and brutality that gives their material lasting replay value.
Early hardcore punk from Fort Worth.
The Human Condition is a doom metal band from Macclesfield, Cheshire, active since 2010. Their music explores the existential weight of their namesake through glacially-paced doom riffs and oppressive atmospheres from the edge of the Peak District.
From Jackson, Kentucky, The Human Tragedy have been crafting symphonic black metal since 2017 in a part of the country not traditionally associated with the genre — which makes their ambition all the more striking. Orchestral flourishes are woven tightly into the black metal framework rather than applied superficially, giving the music a dramatic, storm-swept quality. There's something fitting about symphonic black metal taking root in Appalachian Kentucky, where landscape and isolation lend themselves naturally to grand, mournful expression.
The Hunchback is a heavy metal band from Brindisi, Italy, formed in 2018. They deliver traditional heavy metal with powerful riffs and dark thematic imagery from the Puglia region.
