A New York black/death metal project formed in 2018, The True Goat channels raw, ritualistic aggression with an underground ethos that favors darkness over accessibility. Their approach leans into the primitive, confrontational side of extreme metal with little concession to polish.
The True Hellfyre Warmachine from Reichenbach im Vogtland in Saxony forge blackened thrash metal with the infernal military precision their elaborate name suggests since 2016. Their sound combines black metal's atmospheric hostility with thrash's velocity from the eastern German Vogtland region.
Mayhem formed in Oslo, Norway in 1984, founded by guitarist Øystein "Euronymous" Aarseth, bassist Jørn "Necrobutcher" Stubberud, and drummer Kjetil Manheim, and became the most notorious and influential act in the development of Norwegian black metal. The band's early lineups included vocalist Per "Dead" Ohlin, whose theatrical corpse paint stage persona and 1991 suicide deepened the band's mythology, and the subsequent murder of Euronymous by Varg Vikernes of Burzum in 1993 overshadowed the release of their debut De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas (1994), now regarded as a foundational document of the genre. Surviving members reformed with new lineups, releasing Grand Declaration of War (2000) and Ordo Ad Chao (2007), the latter winning Norway's Spellemann Award for best heavy metal album. Attila Csihar has been the band's vocalist since the mid-2000s reformation.
The True Mierdum is a one-person raw black metal project from Ituzaingó, Buenos Aires, operated solely by the musician known as Mr. Fuck Khaos Occulta. The project released the full-length "Open the Gates, Carlos (El Portero del Diablo)" in July 2009 and "Under a Peronist Moon" in September 2013, blending harsh kvlt black metal aesthetics with sardonic Argentine cultural references to Peronism and football.
Indianapolis's The Tug Fork River Band have been mining the groove-heavy, swampy end of Southern metal since 2012, delivering thick riffs with a blues-inflected grit. Their name and sound both nod to the working-class river country that runs through Southern and Midwestern American identity.
The Ugly Kings formed in Melbourne, Australia around 2014, delivering a sound the band describes as "power blues" — a combination of darkened heavy blues, raw punk energy, and a metallic rock edge that draws on the directness of The White Stripes and the weight of Queens of the Stone Age. Their debut Darkness Is My Home was received as one of the standout Australian heavy rock releases of its year, and their sophomore album Strange, Strange Times, released via Napalm Records in August 2021, extended their reach internationally. The two-piece format gives their recordings a sparse but punishing character consistent with the stripped-down blues rock tradition.

Muscatine, Iowa's The Unbecoming have been delivering straightforward death metal since 2013, keeping their focus on riff density and guttural intensity without dressing it up in atmosphere or technicality. They represent the no-frills end of Midwestern death metal.
