Coffins formed in Tokyo, Japan in 1996, anchoring their sound in the lumbering intersection of doom metal and death metal, with heavily downtuned guitars, slow tempos, and gore-obsessed lyrical themes. After a period of demos and splits, the band signed to Razorback Records and released their debut studio album Mortuary in Darkness in 2005, following it with The Other Side of Blasphemy (2006) and Buried Death (2008) on 20 Buck Spin. They have maintained a prolific release schedule across over twenty split releases alongside four full-lengths.
