Ex Deo is a melodic and symphonic death metal project formed in Montreal, Canada in 2008 by Kataklysm frontman Maurizio Iacono, dedicated entirely to concept albums about the history of the Roman Empire. Their debut Romulus (2009) on Nuclear Blast introduced the project's approach of marrying aggressive death metal riffing with orchestral arrangements and choral elements, a formula deepened on Caligvla (2012), The Immortal Wars (2017, covering the Punic Wars), and The Thirteen Years of Nero (2021). Band members perform in modified Roman legion uniforms, reinforcing the project's immersive historical theatrics.
