Mercyful Fate

Formed in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1981 by vocalist King Diamond and guitarist Hank Shermann, Mercyful Fate were central figures in the first wave of black metal alongside Venom and Bathory. Their debut album Melissa (1983) and its follow-up Don't Break the Oath (1984) are landmark recordings that directly influenced the emerging thrash, death, and black metal genres with their occult themes and Diamond's extraordinary falsetto range. After Diamond departed for a solo career, the band reunited in 1992 and recorded five additional studio albums before disbanding again in 2000 and announcing another reunion in 2019.
