Turisas was founded in 1997 in Hämeenlinna, Finland by Mathias Nygård and Jussi Wickström, taking their name from an ancient Finnish god of war. The band plays a bombastic form of folk and symphonic metal drawing on Finnish mythology and history, brought to international attention with debut album Battle Metal (2004) on Century Media. Their theatrical visual presentation — war paint, battle costumes — became as integral to their identity as the band's large ensemble arrangements.
