581 Bands, Zero Shows: Athens Tops World Metal Index's Band Count But Not Its Live Circuit
As of 2026-09-22, World Metal Index indexes 58,202 bands, 2,699 venues, and 1,575 upcoming shows worldwide. Buried in that dataset is a disconnect worth flagging: Athens is the single largest city in our band database, home to 581 acts, yet it currently shows zero upcoming performances in our index. London, by contrast, has 96 fewer bands on record — 485 — but accounts for 120 of the 1,575 upcoming shows we track, making it by far the most active live market in the dataset. Band density and live-show density are, it turns out, two very different maps.
The Genre Landscape
Death Metal remains the largest tagged genre in the index, with 18,177 bands, followed closely by Black Metal at 16,611. Together these two genres account for roughly 60% of all genre tags applied across the database. Thrash Metal sits a distant third at 9,292 bands, ahead of Heavy Metal (6,579) and Doom Metal (5,595). Note that genre counts sum to more than the total band count because many acts carry multiple genre tags (a Death/Doom band, for instance, appears in both counts).

The gap between Black Metal and Thrash Metal (7,319 bands) is larger than the entire population of Groove Metal or Grindcore bands individually, underscoring how top-heavy the genre distribution is once you get past the top two categories.
Where the Bands Are
Athens leads all cities in our index with 581 bands, ahead of Los Angeles (494), Moscow (485), London (485), and Helsinki (482). São Paulo (460), Paris (415), Chicago (336), Berlin (326), and Madrid (316) round out the top ten. Combined, these ten cities account for 4,380 bands — about 7.5% of the total 58,202 in the index — which means the overwhelming majority of bands we track are spread across cities outside this top tier. Metal's population, at least by our count, is wide rather than concentrated.

The Live Circuit Gap
Of the ten cities with the most bands on record, six currently list zero upcoming shows in our index: Athens, Moscow, São Paulo, and Madrid among the largest band populations, plus effectively negligible activity in Paris (1 show) and Berlin (2 shows). Only London (120), Los Angeles (12), Chicago (6), and Helsinki (3) show meaningful near-term booking activity. Together, these ten cities account for just 144 of the 1,575 total upcoming shows we track — about 9.1% — meaning roughly 91% of the shows in our index are happening in cities outside the ten largest band hubs.
London alone represents 83% of the show activity among the top-ten band cities (120 of 144), despite ranking fourth in band count. This suggests that where bands are formed and where bands play are not the same question, and that our upcoming shows listings skew toward markets with dense venue booking pipelines rather than simply dense band populations. With 2,699 venues indexed against 1,575 upcoming shows, the current show-to-venue ratio sits at roughly 0.58 — meaning, on average, fewer than one upcoming show is currently booked per venue on record, a reminder that show data is a live, constantly updating layer on top of a much larger and more static venue index.
New Blood in 2026
The index's newest entries are all bands formed in 2026, reflecting ongoing additions to the database rather than a single scene or region. Recent additions include 12 Gauge Autopsy, Abundance, Abyssolotus, Accabadora, and Acephalia. These entries sit at the front of an alphabetically-adjacent cluster, suggesting World Metal Index's cataloguing of 2026-formed bands is still in its early stages — a number worth revisiting as the year progresses and more new acts are logged.

This analysis is based on World Metal Index's first-party database of bands, shows, and venues, as queried on 2026-09-22. Totals reflect 58,202 indexed bands, 2,699 indexed venues, and 1,575 upcoming shows at the time of the query. Genre counts reflect band-level genre tags, which are not mutually exclusive — a single band may be counted in more than one genre category. City-level band and show counts reflect the primary city associated with each band or show record in our system. All figures are drawn exclusively from World Metal Index's internal index and are not aggregated from third-party sources.
