FR · 1995–present · active
Carnival in Coal formed in Amiens, France in 1995, conceived by vocalist Arno Strobl and multi-instrumentalist Axel Wursthorn as a collision of Mr. Bungle-style avant-garde absurdism and the brute force of death and black metal. The band signed to Season of Mist and later Earache's Elitist sublabel, releasing records including Viva La Vida (1999), French Cancan (1999), Fear Not Carnival in Coal, and Collection Prestige (2005). They disbanded in 2007 and briefly revived the project in 2014.

New York's Coral Cross bend black metal through an avant-garde lens, disrupting the genre's orthodoxies with unconventional structures and experimental sonic choices. They occupy an unsettling space between atmospheric extremity and deliberate strangeness.
Marlboro, NJ, US · 2018–present · active
New Jersey's Count Dirtbagulous take avant-garde black metal in strange and confrontational directions, subverting genre conventions with dark humor and genuine musical weirdness. The name says something about their approach — serious art wearing a ridiculous costume.
Oconomowoc, WI, US · 2019–present · active
Oconomowoc, Wisconsin outfit pushing thrash through progressive and avant-garde filters, arriving somewhere legitimately strange. Their compositions sprawl in unexpected directions while retaining real aggression.
Hialeah, FL, US · 2004–present · active
Hialeah, Florida's Crotchduster are one of the most genuinely bizarre bands in American metal, fusing avant-garde absurdism with death metal brutality across a discography that sounds like nothing else. Their cult classic album "Big Fat Box of Shit" remains a landmark of intentionally deranged extreme music.
