Solefald is a Norwegian avant-garde metal duo formed in 1995 by multi-instrumentalist Lars Are 'Lazare' Nedland and vocalist-guitarist Cornelius Jakhelln, who named the project after an Old Norse word for 'sunset.' The band's first album The Linear Scaffold laid out their framework of black metal fused with experimental and literary influences, while Pills Against the Ageless Ills (2001) — a concept album about a pornographer and a monk — demonstrated the absurdist conceptual ambition that would define subsequent records. In Harmonia Universali (2003) featured lyrics in four languages, each song dedicated to a different historical figure or deity. Solefald have rarely performed live, preferring to exist primarily as a recording project.

Dallas' The Argonaut have been charting their own course through avant-garde progressive death metal since 2007, building music that sprawls and coils with the relentless ambition their name implies — searching, dissonant, and structurally bold in ways that distinguish them from the more straightforward corners of the Texas metal underground. Their sound treats the death metal template as a starting point rather than a destination.
