Asrai is a gothic rock and metal band from Schiedam, Netherlands, founded in 1985 in the Rotterdam underground scene by twin sisters Karin and Margriet, adopting the Asrai name in 1988. Their output sits at the intersection of gothic metal and gothic rock, and the band gained wider European exposure with their 1997 debut album As Voices Speak, which received a German release through Poison Ivy Records. Later releases including Touch in the Dark and Pearls in Dirt (2007) refined their atmospheric sound, and a 30th anniversary collection, Hourglass, gathered key material and remixes.
Christian Death formed in Los Angeles in 1979, founded by vocalist Rozz Williams, and their 1982 debut Only Theatre of Pain became one of the defining documents of the American death rock and gothic rock movements. After the original lineup dissolved in 1983, the band continued under the direction of guitarist Valor Kand, with Williams later forming a parallel version and the two camps existing in dispute for years before Williams' death in 1998. The band retains an active presence and continues to record and tour under Kand's leadership.
Brighton trio Esben and the Witch — Rachel Davies, Thomas Fisher, and Daniel Copeman — formed in 2008 and built a reputation for atmospheric music that fuses post-punk, darkwave, shoegaze, and gothic rock into cathartic, densely layered compositions. Their debut album Violet Cries (2011) on Matador Records reached number 13 on the UK Indie Chart and brought widespread critical attention, followed by Wash the Sins Not Only the Face (2013) and A New Nature (2014). Subsequent records including Older Terrors (2016) and Nowhere (2018) on Season of Mist refined their sound toward heavier, more abstract territory.
Portland, Oregon's Hoaxed formed in 2020 as a dark rock duo of vocalist and guitarist Kat Keo and drummer Kim Coffel, later expanding to a trio with the addition of bassist April Dimmick. Their debut full-length Two Shadows followed in 2022, and the Relapse Records album Death Knocks arrived in 2026, blending gothic rock atmospherics with hard rock melody and metal heaviness. The band draws from a range of influences from classic gothic rock to occult rock, with Keo's vocals and the group's moody dynamics placing them alongside a resurgent wave of dark rock acts.
Order of Isaz is a Swedish gothic rock and metal band formed in Stockholm in the winter of 2006, founded by vocalist Martin Got and guitarist Tobias Sidegård. The band released a self-titled EP in 2009 and their sole full-length album, Seven Years of Famine, in 2014, which featured covers of Dead Can Dance's 'Spirit' alongside original compositions blending gothic metal atmosphere with dark rock structure. Their work is tied to the Swedish gothic underground, with Sidegård bringing experience from other Scandinavian extreme metal projects.

Unto Others formed in Portland, Oregon in 2017 — initially under the name Idle Hands — out of the dissolution of traditional metal act Spellcaster, led by singer and guitarist Gabriel Franco. The band revived gothic metal's classic sonics alongside post-punk and new wave influences, drawing comparisons to Sisters of Mercy and Type O Negative at a time when interest in those sounds was resurging. Their second album Strength (2021) on Roadrunner Records and third album Never, Neverland (2024) on Century Media solidified them as one of the most prominent acts in the gothic metal revival.
