Liv Kristine Espenæs is a Norwegian vocalist born in 1976 who first gained recognition as a founding member of Norwegian gothic metal band Theatre of Tragedy, where her soprano voice was paired with male death growls in a contrast that helped define the genre's classic sound. She launched her solo career in 1997, debuting with Deus Ex Machina (1998, Massacre Records), a gothic rock and darkwave album distinct from her metal work. After co-founding Leaves' Eyes in 2003 with Alexander Krull and recording with that band for over a decade, she departed in 2016 to continue solo work.
