New Paltz, New York's Harrower have carved a space in post-black metal since 2015, threading atmospheric passages through black metal's abrasive core with a sophistication that feels native to Hudson Valley's thoughtful underground scene. Their music rewards close attention.
Houston's Hearth Companion bring a warmth and atmospheric depth to post-black metal that reflects both the genre's introspective heritage and Texas's emotional vastness. Formed in 2019, they craft post-black metal that's less ice-cold cathedral and more smoldering midnight fire.
Homunculi was a post-black metal and post-rock project from Curitiba, Brazil, that released a self-titled album featuring three tracks including "Crows," "Viver Fim," and "Depois de falarem os dominantes, falarão os dominados." The band operated as an independent act and channeled themes of anti-fascism, anarchism, and social critique into their music before splitting up.
Brisbane atmospheric black metal band Hope Drone formed in 2011 and established themselves with a 2013 self-titled EP that drew immediate critical attention for its dense, layered post-black metal approach. Their Relapse Records debut Cloak of Ash (2015) placed them among the leading acts in contemporary atmospheric black metal internationally, with subsequent albums Void Lustre (2019) and Husk (2021) deepening a sound built on nihilistic themes and slow-burning, wall-of-sound arrangements. The band's geographic isolation from major metal scenes has done little to diminish their international profile.
Huszar is a one-man progressive post-black metal and ambient project from San Antonio de Padua, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina, formed in 2015. The project released the full-length "Los Nuevos Absolutos De Todos Los Días Quemados" in October 2016 and its sequel "Los Nuevos Absolutos: Acto Segundo" in February 2017, and also contributed to a split release with Youth Against Christ in 2017.
