Seven Sisters of Sleep is a sludge and doom metal band from Southern California, formed in mid-2009 from members of Tafkata and The Arm and Sword of a Bastard God. The band built their sound on a foundation of occult-themed, downtuned sludge drawing from doom, death metal, black metal, and d-beat, releasing records on A389 Recordings and Southern Lord, among others. They released multiple full-length albums before disbanding following legal troubles involving a former member, leaving behind a body of work regarded as important within the Southern California heavy underground.
Severer is a Lafayette, Louisiana doom and sludge metal band formed in 2015, drawing naturally on the heavy, humid atmosphere that has made Louisiana a breeding ground for miserable, crushing music. Named with a nod to Gene Wolfe's science fantasy, Seattle's Shadow of the Torturer meld the slow-building menace of doom, the sludge of the Pacific Northwest underground, and death metal's terminal weight into a sound as bleak and relentless as the city's winters. Active since 2012, they've built their craft within one of America's richest heavy music scenes.
Sundsvall's Shadowmaster pair sludge and doom metal from the Norrland coast since 2017. Their name of one who commands shadows channels dominion over darkness into compositions of thick, crushing heaviness from northern Sweden.
Shakhtyor (named after the Russian word for "miner") were "formed in 2009 with the intention to do it slowly in every sense," crafting deliberate sludge/doom metal and post-rock from Hamburg. Their self-titled debut led to a deal with Cyclone Empire for re-release, followed by "Tunguska" in 2014.
Birmingham, Alabama's Shallow Black emerged in 2022 playing sludge and doom metal that carries the tradition of Southern heavy music through a particularly thick and miserable lens. Their approach connects to the long lineage of Southeastern sludge, channeling slow-moving, pitch-black riffs with an uncompromising heaviness.
Olympia, Washington's Shalva take sludge metal into the Pacific Northwest's long tradition of atmospheric heaviness, playing music as grey and waterlogged as the region's winters since 2016. Their sound is dense and unrushed, with the kind of slow-burn weight that rewards patient listeners willing to sit inside the drone.
