Ulcerate formed in Auckland, New Zealand in 2000, built around the partnership of guitarist Michael Hoggard and drummer Jamie Saint Merat, and have become one of the most critically discussed technical death metal bands of their generation. Their music is characterized by dense dissonance, complex rhythmic displacement, and an atmosphere more indebted to Neurosis or Gorguts than conventional death metal brutality.
