Nizhny Novgorod's Voidrider delivers ripping thrash metal from the Volga region, channeling the velocity and precision of classic Bay Area thrash. Their high-energy riffing and aggressive delivery recall the golden age of 1980s thrash.
Voivod formed in Jonquière, Quebec, Canada in 1982 and evolved from raw, Motörhead-influenced thrash on their 1984 debut War and Pain into one of heavy metal's most distinctive and intellectually rigorous bands, fusing science fiction imagery with progressive dissonance and avant-garde experimentation. Albums such as Killing Technology (1987), Dimension Hatröss (1988), and Nothingface (1989) — the latter featuring a cover of Pink Floyd's "Astronomy Domine" and the band's only Billboard 200 entry — established their singular place in the metal canon. With sixteen studio albums across four decades, they are considered a cornerstone of Canadian heavy metal alongside Sacrifice, Razor, and Annihilator.
Saint Paul's Volcano Diving Inc have been at the groove/thrash/metalcore intersection since 2016, which is a noisier crossroads than it sounds — the groove metal chug, thrash precision, and metalcore aggression pull in different directions and the band's trick is keeping it from flying apart. The band name signals they're not taking themselves too seriously, but the music is built on legitimate riff craft underneath the attitude. Eight years in, they've made the combination feel like their own thing.
Sacramento's Volrahven have been playing thrash/death metal since 2020, combining the Bay Area thrash tradition in their geographic vicinity with the more vicious end of death metal to produce something meaner than pure thrash and more riff-centered than pure death. California has an obvious claim on both genres and Volrahven work like a band that knows the history and wants to operate in the space between the two rather than settling for either.
