Toronto's Crimson Shadows occupy a thrilling crossroads between melodic death metal and power metal, pairing guttural vocals and blast beats with the anthemic, twin-guitar harmonies and soaring choruses of the epic power metal tradition. Their profile rose substantially after winning the Wacken Metal Battle in 2013, leading to a deal with Napalm Records and a series of albums — including Kings Among Men and Glory on the Battlefield — that made them one of Canada's most distinctive heavy metal exports.
Crownshift are a Finnish metal supergroup formed in Helsinki in 2022, uniting members who previously served in Nightwish, Children of Bodom, Wintersun, and Finntroll — including guitarist Daniel Freyberg, drummer Heikki Saari, and bassist Jukka Koskinen, all alumni of Norther — with vocalist Tommy Tuovinen of MyGrain. Their self-titled debut album, released via Nuclear Blast in 2024, showcased a potent blend of melodic death metal intensity and power metal catchiness, generating immediate buzz as one of the year's most anticipated heavy metal releases.
Atlanta's Dååth emerged in the early 2000s as one of the most ambitious and technically accomplished acts to emerge from the American melodic death metal scene, weaving Berklee-trained musicianship, industrial electronics, and progressive architecture into a dense, forward-thinking sound that drew comparisons to Strapping Young Lad and later-period Death. After releasing four studio albums between 2004 and 2010 — including the well-received The Hinderers (2007) — the band went on hiatus in 2011, eventually returning in 2023 with a deal with Metal Blade Records and their comeback album The Deceivers (2024).
Dawn of Disease were a Osnabrück, Germany melodic death metal band active from 2003 to 2020, producing five studio albums that combined the abrasive Swedish death metal tradition with a more modern and hook-laden melodic sensibility, drawing comparisons to Entombed and Dew-Scented. Though they disbanded in 2020 after vocalist Tomasz Wisniewski's departure, their final albums — including Worship the Grave (2016) and Procession of Ghosts (2019) — represented some of the strongest melodic death metal to emerge from the German scene, with former members subsequently forming Hiraes.
Dethklok began as the fictional band at the center of Brendon Small's Adult Swim animated series 'Metalocalypse,' but the music proved too good to remain fictional. Small, who writes and performs nearly all the music, channels melodic death metal through absurdist comedy, creating albums like 'The Dethalbum' that are genuinely impressive thrash and death metal records in their own right. The project's transition from cartoon novelty to legitimate touring act with Gene Hoglan on drums is one of metal's most unlikely success stories.
After the dissolution of Coal Chamber, vocalist Dez Fafara formed DevilDriver in Santa Barbara, California in 2002, pursuing a more aggressive direction rooted in groove metal and melodic death metal. Albums like 'The Fury of Our Maker's Hand' and 'The Last Kind Words' showcased a band far heavier than Fafara's nu-metal origins suggested, driven by relentless double-bass drumming and interlocking guitar harmonies. Their ambitious country-metal covers album 'Outlaws 'Til the End' revealed an unexpected creative range.
Formed in Luleå, Sweden in late 1992 under the name Disrupt, Gates of Ishtar released three albums in rapid succession between 1996 and 1998 — A Bloodred Path, The Dawn of Flames, and At Dusk and Forever — each on Invasion Records and each regarded as classics of the Gothenburg melodic death metal sound. Their music blended the iron-fisted melody of early In Flames and At the Gates with icy black metal atmosphere. The band disbanded in the late 1990s but reunited in 2015, though they have been on hold since 2019.
Montreal's Kataklysm have been one of the premier death metal bands in the Canadian extreme metal scene since forming in 1991. Known as 'the northern hyperblast,' the band earned their nickname through the relentless speed and ferocity of albums like 'Shadows & Dust' and 'In the Arms of Devastation.' Vocalist Maurizio Iacono's commanding growls and the band's ability to balance blast-beat savagery with groove-driven hooks have kept them at the forefront of death metal for over three decades.
Los Angeles-based Nekrogoblikon have carved out a gleefully absurd niche as metal's premier goblin-themed band, delivering surprisingly technical melodic death metal wrapped in darkly comedic theatrics featuring their mascot, John Goblikon. Albums like 'Heavy Meta' and 'Welcome to Bonkers' pair genuine musical chops with tongue-in-cheek humor, blending death metal growls with synth-driven melodies and power metal hooks. Their viral music videos and outlandish live shows have built a devoted cult following that proves metal and comedy can coexist without sacrificing heaviness.
