Within Temptation formed in Waddinxveen in 1996 around Sharon den Adel and Robert Westerholt, first developing a gothic and doom-influenced symphonic metal sound before becoming one of the Netherlands' most internationally recognized heavy bands. Enter introduced the darker early style, but Mother Earth gave the band a broader identity through folk-like melodies, orchestral atmosphere, and den Adel's soaring vocal lines. The Silent Force and The Heart of Everything pushed the music toward larger symphonic arrangements and more direct metal hooks, while later albums such as The Unforgiving, Hydra, Resist, and Bleed Out incorporated modern rock production, electronic elements, and collaborations without abandoning the dramatic vocal center. The band's history is marked by scale: choirs, strings, cinematic intros, and arena-ready choruses are used to heighten songs rather than simply decorate them. Within Temptation's metal identity comes from heavy guitars and gothic tension, but their lasting signature is the union of dark romantic atmosphere, polished melodic songwriting, political urgency in later work, and expansive symphonic force while keeping den Adel's voice as the anchor.
