Funeral formed in Drammen, Norway in 1991 and are widely recognized as one of the founding acts of funeral doom metal, a subgenre that took its name partly from the band itself. Founded by drummer Anders Eek and guitarist Thomas Angell, the band's 1993 demo Tristesse and the debut full-length Tragedies (1995) established the template of near-static tempos, extended song lengths, and oppressive grief-saturated atmospheres. Over subsequent decades the band evolved toward gothic doom metal, releasing From These Wounds (2006) on Candlelight Records and continuing to record through Gospel of Bones (2024) on Season of Mist.
Funeral Art was a one- to two-person ambient black/funeral doom metal project from Guatemala City, active from 2007 to 2018. The project was driven by Lord Marbas (all instruments, vocals, and programming) alongside vocalist M. Bitia Kosemet, and accumulated a prolific output including full-lengths such as Arcano (2010), Forgotten & Abandoned (2011), Susurros de una noche (2011), and La belleza oculta (2015). Themes of darkness, night, and human despair run throughout their catalog.
