Black metal project from Eskisehir in central Turkey, active since 2014 and contributing to Anatolia's growing extreme metal scene. Their dark sonic vision adds Turkish perspective to the global black metal underground.
Formed in 1990 in Sweden by Stefan Brisland-Ferner and collaborators, Garmarna built their sound around traditional Scandinavian ballads and folk melodies filtered through modern electronics, beats, and loops. Their second full-length earned them a Swedish Grammy for best folk album of 1996, and releases like Vittrad and Vengeance established them as leaders in Nordic folk-rock. After a lengthy hiatus, they returned with Förbundet in 2020 on Season of Mist, largely comprising interpretations of traditional Swedish folk songs.
Richland, Washington's Garmr has been refining a bleak and atmospheric black metal sound since 2016, shaped in part by the arid, desolate landscape of eastern Washington's high desert plateau. The project shares its name with Norse mythology's underworld guardian, and the sound reflects that ominous provenance.
