Minnesota's Gates of Dawn exist at a strange and compelling crossroads — atmospheric black metal swirled through with psychedelic rock undertones and dungeon synth ambience, a combination that feels both vast and intimate. Their music conjures frozen northern landscapes and lysergic inner worlds in equal measure.

Formed in Luleå, Sweden in late 1992 under the name Disrupt, Gates of Ishtar released three albums in rapid succession between 1996 and 1998 — A Bloodred Path, The Dawn of Flames, and At Dusk and Forever — each on Invasion Records and each regarded as classics of the Gothenburg melodic death metal sound. Their music blended the iron-fisted melody of early In Flames and At the Gates with icy black metal atmosphere. The band disbanded in the late 1990s but reunited in 2015, though they have been on hold since 2019.
Taking their name from H.P. Lovecraft's dreaming fortress, Gates of Kadath traffic in black/death metal that feels suitably cosmic and malevolent. Formed in 2019 with no fixed location on record, they carry the air of something deliberately obscure.
Vienna's Gates of Londra play a multifarious industrial black metal that draws freely from post-punk, dungeon synth, deathrock, epic metal, and symphonic black metal, making for a distinctive and deliberately eclectic sound. Their 2022 full-length Servants of the Runestaff is a nine-track concept album inspired by Michael Moorcock's History of the Runestaff fantasy cycle.
