Strapping Young Lad was formed in Vancouver, Canada in 1994 by Devin Townsend, initially as a one-man studio vehicle for his most extreme and chaotic songwriting. By 1997 the project expanded into a full band featuring drummer Gene Hoglan, guitarist Jed Simon, and bassist Byron Stroud, and the album City established the band's reputation for wall-of-sound industrial metal production married to death and black metal extremity. Subsequent records including Alien (2005) and The New Black (2006) broadened their audience before Townsend disbanded the group in 2007 to pursue a less abrasive creative direction. Strapping Young Lad are widely regarded as one of the most sonically intense bands in extreme metal history.
