Twilight of the Gods coalesced in 2010 as a Bathory tribute project before evolving into an original band, taking their name from the sixth Bathory album. The lineup assembled a collection of veterans drawn from Einherjer, Mayhem, Aura Noir, Thyrfing, and Primordial — the latter's Alan Averill serving as vocalist. Their debut Fire on the Mountain (2013) presented original material steeped in Bathory's epic Viking and heavy metal heritage rather than straightforward black metal.

Twin Tribes are not metal, yet they belong in the accepted post-punk and goth-rock scope, especially for a directory that recognizes heavy music's adjacent scenes. Their darkness comes through restraint rather than volume, with repetition, reverb, and bass movement doing the work that distortion would do in a heavier band, especially live.
