Vera Cruz was formed in Paris in 2009, blending melodic hardcore and metalcore with a raw rock 'n' roll edge. The band released their debut EP Surviving Farrah Fawcett in 2010 and followed it with their full-length Skinandteethandnails, which captured the volatile intensity that made them a fixture on the European hardcore circuit alongside acts such as Terror, Every Time I Die, and Cancer Bats. The band disbanded in 2015 after several years of relentless touring across Europe.
Wilmington, Delaware's Vicious Embrace have spent a decade weaponizing the collision between hardcore's raw aggression and metalcore's technical drive. The band's name doubles as a mission statement — they pull you close and then punish you for it.
Vilipêndio is a speed/thrash and hardcore crossover band from Rio de Janeiro, formed in 2012, fusing the aggression of Brazil's thrash tradition with hardcore punk energy. The band appeared on a limited three-way split cassette alongside Espectro Tenebroso and A.N.T.I.L.I.V., released on Arte Ancestral Records in December 2019 in a run of 33 copies.
New York's Vise Massacre has been hammering out hardcore-thrash crossover since 2012, embodying the no-nonsense collision of punk attitude and metal precision that the genre has always promised. Their sound is built for small rooms and large amounts of sweat — stripped down, fast, and combative in the best tradition of the New York underground.
Morgantown, West Virginia's Vulgar Royalty formed in 2021 with a sound that collapses grindcore, hardcore, and sludge metal into one misanthropic heap. The combination gives their music a relentless forward momentum shot through with the kind of slow, grinding dread that sludge does best.
Walls of Jericho formed in Detroit, Michigan in 1998, fronted by vocalist Candace Kucsulain, and became a significant force in early 2000s metalcore through a sound that balanced old-school hardcore, thrash metal, and the chug-driven heaviness of the genre's emerging wave. The band released a series of albums on Trustkill Records, including All Hail the Dead (2004) and With Devils Amongst Us All (2006), before a lengthy hiatus and return with No One Can Save You from Yourself (2016). Kucsulain's commanding presence made Walls of Jericho one of the most visible female-fronted acts in the hardcore and metalcore underground.
War Prison formed in Tucson in 2019, fusing the caustic intensity of Sonoran Desert hardcore with the surgical brutality of death metal. The band operates where pit-ready aggression and outright death metal violence are functionally indistinguishable — every riff an instrument of damage. Tucson's scene has long punched above its weight, and War Prison carries that tradition forward with no apology.
Forming in Los Angeles in 2024, Whoremones crash together hardcore's blunt-force aggression with heavy metal's commanding riffs into something confrontational and raw. Still freshly minted, this band represents the city's long tradition of cross-pollinating extreme subgenres into something harder to ignore than either alone.
Tucson's Wield formed in 2021 at the brutal intersection of death metal and hardcore — two genres that, at their most aggressive, aren't that far apart, and Wield makes sure you feel exactly how close together they can get. The desert city provides an appropriate backdrop for music this confrontational and relentless.
