Port Huron, MI, US · 2020–present · active
Port Huron, Michigan's With or Without formed in 2020 and bring a progressive dimension to their metalcore foundation, stretching song structures and harmonic ideas further than the genre's more orthodox practitioners. The progressive metalcore space has become increasingly crowded, but a band emerging from small-city Michigan brings a different hunger to the table. Their Bandcamp presence suggests a band serious about craft and musical growth.
CA, US · 2013–present · active
Witherfall was formed in Los Angeles, California in 2013 by vocalist Joseph Michael and guitarist Jake Dreyer, both veterans of White Wizzard, channeling dark progressive and power metal in the tradition of Queensrÿche and Fates Warning. Their 2017 debut Nocturnes and Requiems was shadowed by the death of original drummer Adam Sagan from lymphoma in December 2016, and the band's subsequent output — A Prelude to Sorrow (2018), The Curse of Autumn (2020), and Sounds of the Forgotten (2024) — has carried a thematic weight commensurate with that loss. They are regarded as one of the stronger acts in the modern progressive power metal revival.
Omaha, NE, US · 2018–present · active
Omaha, Nebraska's Witherfang have been building progressive metal architecture since 2018, occupying a Midwestern corner of a genre usually associated with major coastal scenes. Progressive metal rewards ambition over geography, and Witherfang seem to understand that — their name and Bandcamp presence suggest a band interested in the longer, more complex end of heavy music. Omaha has a quietly serious underground, and Witherfang are a credible part of it.
SE · 2019–present · active
Progressive rock and melodic death metal project from Sweden. Witherscape blends the intricate arrangements of progressive rock with the aggressive melodicism of Swedish death metal.
HU · 1997–present · active
Founded in Veszprém, Hungary in 1997, Without Face fused progressive metal, Gothic metal, and thrash in a dual-vocal framework, with male and female voices sharing the narrative weight of lyrics drawn from H.P. Lovecraft, Edgar Allan Poe, and Longfellow. Their debut Deep Inside (2000) appeared on Hammer Music Productions and was subsequently released in the US through Dark Symphonies Records, while the Earache/Elitist follow-up Astronomicon (2002) brought them to wider attention. The band folded shortly after despite interest from the label in a longer deal.
NY, US · 2016–present · active
Without Warning is a New York progressive metal outfit that formed in 2016, channeling the genre's tradition of technical sophistication and expansive song structures. Their music balances intricate musicianship with an emotional weight that keeps complexity from feeling cold or academic. They occupy a space in the progressive metal world where ambition and atmosphere share equal footing.
Haverhill, MA, US · 2013–present · active
Haverhill, Massachusetts's Wizard Business take the cerebral architecture of progressive metal and channel it through a death metal lens, building technically demanding compositions that never lose sight of raw aggression. Formed in 2013, they're part of a strong New England tradition of musicians who treat extreme metal as a vehicle for genuine compositional ambition. The absurdist humor of their name contrasts sharply with the seriousness of their craft.
