Tristania formed in 1996 in Stavanger, Norway, and became one of the defining acts of the late-1990s gothic metal wave alongside Theatre of Tragedy and The Sins of Thy Beloved. Their debut Widow's Weeds (1998) and follow-up Beyond the Veil (1999) established a template built on layered male and female vocals, orchestral arrangements, and death-doom heaviness. The band released seven studio albums over their career before disbanding in 2022.

Their theatrical visual presentation — war paint, battle costumes — became as integral to their identity as the band's large ensemble arrangements.
