Death metal band from Gdańsk, Poland, active since 2013. Their German name, meaning 'giant,' accompanies death metal from the Baltic coast.
Cincinnati's Riesenwolf — German for 'giant wolf' — have been forging a black/heavy metal hybrid since 2022 that draws on the epic qualities of traditional heavy metal while blackening the edges with tremolo-picked menace and harsher vocal work. The Cincinnati underground doesn't always get its due nationally, but Riesenwolf represent a strain of Midwestern metal that combines the grandeur of classic metal songwriting with genuinely extreme sonic aggression. Two years in, they sound like a band already fully formed in their vision.
Rietas is a black metal band from Tornio at the Finnish-Swedish border, formed in 2020. The band channels cold black metal from the northernmost reaches of the Gulf of Bothnia.
Death metal band from Brescia, Italy, active since 2017. Their exhumation-themed name accompanies death metal from the Lombardy industrial city.
Southern/groove metal and alternative rock band from Saint Petersburg, Russia, active since 2009. Their long-running project delivers American-influenced groove and southern metal from Russia's cultural capital.
Sludge/stoner/doom metal band from Warsaw, Poland, formed in 2020. Their descriptively mammoth name accompanies crushing triple-genre heaviness from the Polish capital.
Doom/stoner metal trio from Jundiaí, São Paulo, formed in the second half of 2016 by Rev. Bodefuzz (André Luiz Martins, voice/guitar) and Old One (Paulo Fornazza, drums), later joined by Baron Graves (bass). They released the debut EP Crown of Darkness in early 2018 and the EP Cursed in 2019 through Abraxas Records, followed by the second full-length O Caminho do Aço — recorded at Estúdio Eguchi and released February 27, 2023 through Cospe Fogo Gravações — which is sung entirely in Portuguese.
Poplarville, Mississippi's Riffer Madness have been slinging heavy/thrash metal from the Deep South since 2013, a region where the metal underground operates largely off the radar of the coasts but burns no less fiercely. Their sound draws a straight line to the riff-worship traditions of both classic heavy metal and the thrash genre — an approach rooted in the primacy of the guitar riff as the organizing unit of all meaningful metal music. Small-town Mississippi might seem an unlikely home for metal this earnest and loud, but Riffer Madness make it feel inevitable.
Sioux Falls, South Dakota's Rifflord have been immersed in the doom/stoner universe since 2015, building the kind of riff-centric, low-frequency heavy music that prioritizes crushing weight over technical complexity. South Dakota's vast, flat landscapes lend themselves naturally to slow, expansive music, and Rifflord's weed-scorched tempos and hazy guitar tones feel suited to long, empty stretches of prairie highway. They're a testament to the fact that America's forgotten middle can produce music as heavy and unhurried as anywhere else.
