WAKE formed in Calgary, Alberta, Canada in 2009, initially rooted in grindcore and crust punk before evolving toward an increasingly blackened and atmospheric death metal sound across a prolific run of releases on Metal Blade Records. Their 2018 album Misery Rites marked the band's decisive pivot toward blackened death metal, and subsequent albums Devouring Ruin (2020) and Thought Form Descent (2022) confirmed their standing among the most creatively ambitious acts in North American extreme metal. The band has appeared at international festivals including Obscene Extreme.
