Saint Paul's Volcano Diving Inc have been at the groove/thrash/metalcore intersection since 2016, which is a noisier crossroads than it sounds — the groove metal chug, thrash precision, and metalcore aggression pull in different directions and the band's trick is keeping it from flying apart. The band name signals they're not taking themselves too seriously, but the music is built on legitimate riff craft underneath the attitude. Eight years in, they've made the combination feel like their own thing.
Voltron is a doom/sludge metal/metalcore band from Berlin, Germany, formed in 2007. They combine the crushing low-end of sludge and doom with metalcore's breakdowns and aggressive energy.
Portland, Oregon's Von Doom have been working the metalcore circuit since 2017, drawing on the genre's interplay between crushing breakdowns and melodic tension in a city whose scene has consistently rewarded bands that take the form seriously. Walls of Jericho formed in Detroit, Michigan in 1998, fronted by vocalist Candace Kucsulain, and became a significant force in early 2000s metalcore through a sound that balanced old-school hardcore, thrash metal, and the chug-driven heaviness of the genre's emerging wave. The band released a series of albums on Trustkill Records, including All Hail the Dead (2004) and With Devils Amongst Us All (2006), before a lengthy hiatus and return with No One Can Save You from Yourself (2016). Kucsulain's commanding presence made Walls of Jericho one of the most visible female-fronted acts in the hardcore and metalcore underground.
War from a Harlots Mouth formed in Berlin, Germany in 2005, fusing mathcore's rhythmic complexity with metalcore heaviness and flashes of jazz and death metal in a style that set them apart from more conventional genre peers. Their discography of four full-lengths — Transmetropolitan (2007), In Shoals (2009), MMX (2010), and Voyeur (2012) — earned them a deal with Season of Mist and a loyal international fanbase drawn to their cerebral and technically demanding approach. The band went on indefinite hiatus in 2013 following a farewell tour.
